The 172nd Armor Regiment started out as the 1st Vermont
Infantry militia regiment that fought early in the Civil War.

During World War One the regiment was broken up and most
went to the Machine Gun Battalions of Yankee Division and
served in France.

During World War Two the regiment served as the 172nd Infantry
and fought in the pacific as part of the Winged Victory Division.

In the early 1960s the regiment was converted to armor and soon
after the 3rd battalion was detached and formed a light infantry
mountain battalion.

The 172nd was broken up and served in various parts of Iraq and
Kuwait in the Global War on Terror.

It was in the
42nd Rainbow Division when I was in it.
