George C. Linthicum, 84, formerly of Broomall, a retired sales manager and decorated World War II veteran, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Mr. Linthicum was awarded the Bronze Star Medal while serving in the Army in Europe. During the Battle of the Bulge, his reconnaissance unit captured six German soldiers, a colonel, and a set of enemy battle plans in Rambrouch, Luxembourg. The soldiers were disguised in American uniforms, but were caught because they wore German boots, Mr. Linthicum's son Jim said. The event was included in the 1965 movie The Battle of the Bulge starring Henry Fonda. Mr. Linthicum was past president of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and past National Commander of the Yankee Division Veterans Association. He raised funds for war memorials and spoke to school groups and appeared in videos about his experiences, his son said. A graduate of West Philadelphia High School, Mr. Linthicum went to work for the Philadelphia Electric Co. after his military discharge. He retired from his 40-year career in sales and marketing in 1986. In addition to his son, Mr. Linthicum is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Ryan Linthicum; a son George Jr.; a daughter, Gail Hale; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be at noon today at D'Anjolell Memorial Home, 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill. |
