Vernon Napier was a Staff Sergeant in Company B of the 709th Tank Battalion who was the son of a
man killed in the United States Army in World War One.
At the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest in 1944 his tank ran out of ammunition and he was surrounded. He
ordered his crew off the vehicle and continued to call in support for the infantry around him. He was
rushed by the Germans and pulled out his 1911A1 and fought to his death.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
The Battle of Hürtgen Forest was the only one in World War Two the United States Army did not win.
