John Lejune was a Naval Academy Graduate that hailed from Louisana. He is
considerd the Father of the Modern Marine Corps and started the Marine Corps
Association and the Marine Corps League.
He actully served two years in the Navy before becomming a Marine. He served on
various ships and was at the Veracruz landing. He went on to command the Marine
Brigade and the 2nd United States Division during the Great War. He retired as
Commandant.
Holland Smith was an Alabama native who had a law degree. He was 1st Sergeant
of a Cavalry Troop in the Alabama National Guard. He accepted a Marine
commission and served in Nicaragua and the Phillippines.
He commanded a company during the Great War and became Assistant Operations
Officer of Third Army before returning to United States.
He prepared the Army's Aleutions Campaign during the Second World War and
went on to command all the Marine Landing force through Iwo Jima.
Roy Gieger was a Florida native that enlisted in the Marine Corps and was
commissioned after several years to serve in Nicaragua, China and the Phillippines.
He earned his Naval Aviator Wings and served with the Royal Air Force during the
Great War where he earned the Navy Cross.
During the Pacific he commnaded the 1st Marine Air Wing and a Marine
Amphibous Corps. He would be the only Marine ever to command a field army.
A.A. Vandergrift came from Virginia and served in Veracruz, Haiti, Nicaragua and
China.
He would be appointed Assistant Commandant but be sent back to the fleet to
command the First Marine Division at the Guadacanal Campaign where he would
earn the Medal of Honor.
He retired as Commandant of the Marine Corps.
O.P. Smith was raised in Texas and joined the Marine Corps in 1917. He went to
Guam instead of France and later would serve in Haiti.
During the Second world War he commanded 5th Marines and became Deputy
Chief of Staff for Tenth Army.
He would command the 1st Marine Divison during Korea and lead the breakout at
Chosin. He was critisized by General Almond of the Army, who had a reputation
for blaming others for his own decisions.
Smith retired commanding Fleet Marine Force Atlantic.
